MALWARE ALERT: Fake Mac AV app is a trojan. Watch what and where you download.

For us Mac users who thought the Mac was immune to viruses, malware, trojans, etc. and do not have anti-virus programs installed just got a serious wake-up call in the last few weeks when an "app" posing as a legit "anti-virus" program that warns users they are "infected" with a virus when in fact they are not. This happens when you search for images on Google. This so-called "app" is called "MacProtector", "MacDefender", and several other names.

Apple tech support has been swamped with phone calls and forum posts about this and it's "getting worse." Below are some links with more information and some steps to remove this unnecessary waste of source code and time. This is not a joke, this is serious.

Here are the links: zdnet.com, discussions.apple.com, More at Apple Discussions, removal: bleepingcomputer.com. More info here: Intego.com. <- very important read.
