I wanted certain people to have their own ringtone when they call me and not have the ringtone be what is on the phone, so after a little research, I found what I was looking for and here's how you go about doing this. For this tutorial I will be using iTunes 10.2.2 on Mac OS X 10.6.7.
WARNING: The steps involved are lengthy and probably time consuming. Are you ready for some fun? Here we go.
.) Open iTunes (if it's not already running).
.) Choose a song you would like to turn into a ringtone. (songs that are DRM free will work, songs with DRM will not).
.) Listen to the song you chose and find the part you like that you want to use. (An instrumental, lead, or intro is good)
.) Get a piece of paper and a pen or pencil and write down the start and stop times of the clip (or you can use the Notes App on your iPhone.)
.) Right-click on the song and choose "Get Info."
.) In the window that appears click on the button labelled "Options".
.) In the text box labelled "Start Time" type in the start time of your ringtone in the m:s (i.e. 2:01) format.
.) Now type in the text box labelled "Stop Time" type in the end time of your ringtone. You have to be sure the ringtone is no more than 40 sec. long and click "OK".
.) Right-click on your song and choose "Create AAC Version". iTunes will convert the song and create a duplicate version.
.) Right-click on the ringtone (the shorter version of the song you chose) and choose "Delete", a window will appear asking you if you want to cancel, keep the file, or move the file to the trash. Click on the "Keep File" button.
.) Now find the file in your User folder in /Music/iTunes/iTunes Music under the band's name. It will have the .m4a extension.
.) Now in order for the file to work on the iPhone you have to change the file extension from .m4a to .m4r. The easiest way to do that on Mac OS X is to single click on the file and do a "Get Info" (Cmd+I on the keyboard). Change the last letter of the extension from a to r, the system will warn you that the change may affect the use of your file.
.) Double-click on the ringtone file. iTunes will automatically add it to your ringtones folder in your iTunes Music Library and play the file.
.) Connect your iPhone to your computer and sync your ringtones.
Once it's done with the sync, eject your iPhone from iTunes. Now on your iPhone tap Contacts and tap the name of the contact you want to have the ringtone you just made and tap Edit then ringtone, then give them the ringtone. Repeat the steps above for your other Contacts.Source: www.ehow.com.
