So here's what I did a few of days ago, I used my Mac OS X Leopard DVD and ran Disk Utility to non-destructively create a partition to install Mac OS X Tiger on the new partition, after Tiger finished installing I let my notebook run off the battery to see if the problem was with Leopard, it wasn't, the battery ran down to 84% then did a hard shutdown. I called Apple Care to see what I can do about getting a new battery, I told the support rep the problem I was having, told her about the Battery update page on the support website, told her I was exhibiting the third symptom the page talks about.
She asked me to check my System Profiler Power category and give her Cycle count, full charge capacity, and charge remaining. She then asked me to reset the the System Management Controller, I told her I did that and that it didn't help. She then asked me if I reset the PRAM, I told her that THAT didn't help either. She then talked to a product specialist to give me an exception for a new battery, I was on hold for 6 minutes, when she came back and told me that she couldn't give me the exception, so I asked to speak to a product specialist about my problem, I repeated what I told the rep and with my notebook still under warranty, I was able to get a new battery sent to me and get it installed in my notebook the next day. Well that worked so, I have a new battery.
If you have a MacBook Pro and are having one or all of the symptoms identified in the following link and in or out of warranty you can get a new battery. Here's the link to the Battery Update page: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/.
You can comment on this and tell me if you succeeded in getting a new battery for your MacBook Pro.
